Scent-sational Saturday - Spring Catalog Alert!

Gold Canyon’s Spring catalog started earlier this week.  There are a lot of great new and returning scents and items!  I know a lot of people, including my mom, who will be thrilled to hear about the return of Lilac.  I am excited that Dazzleberry is available again.  Then there is what I think will be my new seasonal favorite, Pitanga Peach.  Yummy!!

Scent-sational Saturday - Party in Pink

Did you know that Gold Canyon has a candle in their holiday catalog that promotes breast cancer awareness?  The Pink Sugar Cookie candle was designed to help raise funds for breast cancer research.  In fact, 10% of the retail value from every tribute candle sold is donated to The Breast CancerResearch Foundation®. BCRF contributes more than 90 cents of every dollar donated to breast cancer research and awareness programs.  The 16 ounce candle is our delicious Sugar Cookie scent – a customer favorite – and is made in the signature pink shade of breast cancer awareness.

Want to help promote this cause and earn some great Gold Canyon products?  Host a Party in Pink!

Scent-sational Saturday - Votives

Dear Maven,

I bought votives this year for the first time (loved the Cozy Christmas scent!) but they tend to make a mess of the votive glass holders. Is there any trick to lessen the mess? Please share!

Sincerely,
Stuck on Votives
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Dear Stuck on Votives,
Girl … where have you been? I can’t believe you just now realized how wonderful our votives are. I’m glad you finally caught up to speed but, wow—have you been missing out! When it comes to cleaning, I generally let my people take care of it for me. But I do happen to have a little trick up my sleeve when it comes to cleaning out votive glasses. The secret is to stick them in your freezer for a few hours. I usually pop them in-between the stems of my chilled martini glasses. Two to three episodes of Desperate Housewives later, the wax is ready to be popped out. You can do this with a butter knife or flat screwdriver. If there is any residue, our Wax Remover will get it right off!
Your Votive Vixen,
Maven

Scent-sational Saturday - Candles: What You Need to Know

This article was published in Gold Canyon's Product Knowledge Guide.

Candles: What You Need to Know

Our high quality wax blend and double wicks ensure our candles provide a consistent, quality fragrance and long burning time, but so does proper candle care. Proper candle care can extend the life of a candle and save money. Independent lab results show that with proper candle care, an 8 oz. candle burns up to five hour longer and produces 90% less soot.
Prior to Lighting
  • Never pick up candles by the lid. The best way to pick up a candle is to place one hand around the neck of the jar, while the other hand supports the bottom of the jar.
  • Read the instructions on the bottom label of the candles. The instructions are placed there as a precaution for burning candles.
  • When applicable, remove decorative accents prior to lighting.
  • Trim wicks to 1/4 inch prior to lighting, but do not drop trimmings into the candle. Long wicks may create too much heat on the glass, potentially causing it to shatter.
 When Burning
  • Use holders to protect the surfaces of tabletops and shelves underneath the candle.
  • To prevent fire, burn the candle within sight, out of the reach of children and pets and away from drafts and anything that may catch fire.
  • Burn long enough to liquefy the entire top layer of wax, not to exceed four hours. If you want to burn a candle longer, extinguish the candle, trim the wick down to 1/4 inch and relight.
  • Handle candle carefully during use and immediately after extinguishing. The glass will be hot.
  • Discontinue burning when 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar. Gold Canyon® has factored this 1/2 inch of wax into our burn time calculations and candle volume measurements.
  • Use a wick dipper to extinguish flames to prevent residual smoke and splattered wax. The coating of wax also makes the wick easier to relight.
Cleaning Your Candle
  • If the waxy part of your candle has gotten dirty, wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth.
  • Black soot on the jars can be caused by any number of reasons, including untrimmed wicks and burning a candle in a draft, or near, or below a fan. Soot can be removed with glass cleaner and paper towels.
Candle Storage
  •  Store your candles in a temperature-controlled environment (65°-80°F). Candles begin to melt at approximately 150°F. If candles get too cold, at approximately 65°F, the wax may shrink and pull away from the glass. This only affects the appearance, not the quality of the burn or the fragrance.
  • Do not expose candles to direct sunlight or fluorescent light; it will discolor the candles over time.

Scent-sational Saturday- Heritage Candles

Heritage candles are getting a new look!  The candles will no longer have a label, letting the Diamond-Light shine through.

Dear Maven,
I love the new Heritage® and my customers are just ecstatic about it, but I have a few concerns. Without the label, how am I supposed to know what fragrance the candle is? Also, what happened to the hidden prayer children? Without the label they have no place to hide!

Sincerely,

Mixed Feelings

Dear Mixed Feelings,

I’m glad you’re in love with new Heritage with Diamond-Light™. If you told me otherwise, I would have to question your style sense. Your first question does make me question your common sense though … and I mean that in the nicest way possible. I just can’t believe that you think Gold Canyon would leave you hanging with no fragrance label—that’s absurd! You’ll be tickled pink to hear that the fragrance appears at the bottom of the jar in a large, easy-to-read font.

The prayer children haven’t gone anywhere either! Instead of hiding on the jar they are hiding in the jar. I’m just being sassy (kidding)! They aren’t really hidden in the jar, but they are hidden in the catalog. Those munchkins have a much bigger area to play hide-and-seek in now. I haven’t found them yet, but I know they’re in there. If anyone finds them, you have to let me know where they are. Call me … maybe.

Sincerely,

Your Diamond-Light Diva

Dear Maven - Glass Chimney Holders

Dear Maven, The new Glass Chimneys are so beautiful and I love this versatile alternative to pillar candles. I noticed in the catalog that these fit only tealights. Is this correct? They seem large enough for jar candles.

Just like last month’s Dear Maven Demo, you are also very resourceful! However, sometimes our creativity can get in the way of being completely safe. These new Glass Chimneys are so versatile—thank you for pointing that out—but they really should only be used with tealights to ensure optimal performance and safety. Although these holders will accommodate a larger candle than a tealight, the performance is not desirable and does not meet Gold Canyon’s safety standards.

...

Now let’s talk more about these wonderful alternatives to the pillar candles. You mentioned versatile and yes they are!
  • You can get the look and fragrance you want.
  • They can be used in many types of décor styles.
  • There are several color options for everyday use as well as holiday decorating.
Your generous friend,

Maven

Dear Maven - Milder Scents?

Dear Maven,

Your candles are fabulous! I always look forward to burning them to freshen different areas of my home. I have, however, noticed that some candles do not seem to have as much fragrance as others. Sometimes I feel like I’m smelling the wax more than the scent and I’m tempted to add some of your Diffuser oil with a dropper to give the candle a fragrance boost. What do you suggest when I get a candle that seems to have limited fragrance?

Well, first let me say that flattery will get you everywhere. I like to think that I had a little something to do with your satisfaction with our candles, as I am always offering our R & D department my sage advice – sometimes solicited and frequently not.

Moving on to your question, my answer is best summed up in the old saying, ‘Patience is a virtue.’ When you receive a candle that does not seem to have a strong scent, the best recommendation is to put it away and smell it again the next morning to make sure your nose isn’t playing tricks on you. Personally, after a long day of latte runs to my local café, slathering myself with cosmetics, heading to the mall food court to grab a bite to eat, re-spritzing myself with my favorite body spray (Your Inspraytion™ Body Mist from our EMERGE™ collection, of course) and pumping gas (ick!), my nose understandably has an identity crisis on its hands and can’t smell the full bouquet of fragrance notes that may be present in one of Gold Canyon’s amazing candles. Bottom line: it’s a good idea to give your nose a break and check out that new candle a second time when you know your nose is fresh and hasn’t been assaulted by the variety of smells you’re likely to encounter throughout the course of your day.

If you have given your olfactory senses a break and are certain your new candle doesn’t smell like it should, please contact Gold Canyon and let us send you an exchange. Everyone here takes maintaining our reputation as “The World’s Finest”® quite seriously and we truly want you to be completely satisfied. Additionally, we may request that you return the candle to us so we can get to the bottom of it if there is a quality issue. Our goal is that every single candle produced be perfect every time.

One last note of expert advice, DO NOT use your Diffuser oil in your candle! This will eventually cause your wick to stop functioning correctly and your candle will not burn. For more information about the appropriate use of Gold Canyon Diffusers (and every other fabulous product we offer), consult your Gold Canyon Demonstrator.

Scents to fall for

The Fall/Holiday catalog has been released. While there are some new, wonderful scents, there are also several returning from last year. Of these, two make me the happiest. Gingerbread House and Pumpkin Pie.

Not only are both of these holiday scents popular, but they happen to be two of my all-time favorites available through Gold Canyon. The spicy sweet smell of both Pumpkin Pie and Gingerbread House are delicious, yet don’t make me want to eat a bunch of sweets (like other baking scents). I adore them both so much that I keep a sample of each in my office for when someone heats up a stinky lunch across the hall.

New scents for the season:
  • Apple of my Eye (Candle for Kids scent)
  • Brown Sugar Spookie
  • Candy Cane
  • Cider Brew
  • Iced Bayberry
  • No More Sniffles (Candle for Kids scent)
  • Roasted White Peppercorn
  • Sugared Vanilla Bean

Scents returning from last Fall:
  • Candy Corn
  • Christmas Presence
  • Cinnamon Garland
  • Cozy Christmas
  • Days of Christmas
  • Gingerbread House
  • Holiday Wreath
  • King’s Myrrh
  • Mrs. Claus’s Kitchen
  • Mulled Harvest
  • Peppermint Bark
  • Sleigh Ride
  • Spiced Gumdrops

Dear Maven - Wick won't stay lit?

Dear Maven,

What do you do with a candle, or specifically the wicks, that won’t stay lit especially in the larger size jars?

If you have a wick that won’t light, you’ve simply gone too far. It’s like saying, “now that I have a traffic ticket, how do I make it go away?” The trick is not to get the traffic ticket to begin with! Let me explain…

When you first receive your candle, you may notice that sometimes the top is not completely flat across. This is completely normal. The top becomes caved in when the natural crystallization process experiences slightly differing humidity and temperatures.

If you come across a candle like this, the trick is not to trim your wick for the first lighting. I know you’re thinking about that mantra that’s ingrained in your brain about always trimming your wicks. However, this is a special case. I give you permission to not trim your wicks—just this once!

You’ll need to plan on a first burn of approximately four hours to condition the candle but after this first burn it should level itself out. Once your candle is flat, then trim to ¼ inch and continue to burn.

New Uses for Mismatched Dishware

Champagne Flutes as Candle Stands

If you find yourself with a mismatched collection―or without bubbly―flip thick-walled Champagne flutes upside down to create a beautiful grouping of candle stands for a shelf or a mantel. Use heavy wineglasses for table centerpieces, as the wider mouths will provide more stability to withstand bumping.

Where does it go?

Question: Where Does Candle Wax Go?

Answer: Have you ever noticed how you have less candle after burning than before? This is because the wax oxidizes (burns) in the flame to yield water and carbon dioxide, which dissipate in the air around the candle, in a reaction which also yields light and heat. Candle wax (paraffin) is composed of chains of connected carbon atoms surrounded by hydrogen atoms. These hydrocarbon molecules can burn completely. First the heat of the flame vaporizes the wax molecules and then they react with the oxygen in the air. As long as the wax doesn't melt away from the flame, the flame will consume it completely and leave no ash or wax residue.
